Retired Afloat

Last Friday we rode our bikes from our free mooring into Leiden and took the train into Amsterdam to have lunch with dear friends Gordon Leck and Penny Leck, to start Lea's birthday month celebrations. πŸ™„πŸ₯‚πŸ₯‚

It was then an overnight in Leiden marina to top up with essentials and provisions before heading off to Kaag Island for overnight. We were entertained all afternoon and evening with live entertainment that was being held around the island. We sat on the back of Sunshine Coast with a wine listening to the local bands.

We have now made our way to another restaurant mooring we have found at #demolenplas 5kms from Haarlem. It's a lovely lake area and a good place to tuck away for a couple of days to sit out the 50km+ and 40km+ wind gusts forecast for today and tomorrow.

Time to relax.... more ..... again. πŸ˜ƒ

Thank you for hunkering down and being safeπŸ’•

If you cycle across the canal from de Molenplaats you can visit the memorial wood to the victims of MH17 which was shot down by the Russians over Ukraine, a number of Australians were on board . My cousin and his family were on board, so we always try to visit if we are passing and certainly will this year as it may be our last chance. We went to the 10 anniversary memorial where the King, ministers etc were there, it was a very moving ceremony and I got to read out my cousins name and his family plus an Australian. There is a very moving monument in the centre with a tree planted for each victim.

Looks a beautiful stretch of water to shelter from the wind. Stay safe. Currently 32C here with a light breeze. We could do with a boat trip! Xx

Fabulous day with good friends Peter and Kaye Trainor who changed their plane flights to give us the opportunity to get together.

We had a wonderful day, despite their first Uber from Amsterdam cancelling on them, the boat fire at Leidschendam harbour that initially prevented us from starting our canal tour with them, the wine glass that got knocked overboard and a light shower. Apart from that we had a fab day!

It Was Wonderful to see them and share what we love, even just for a few hours and always great company. Thank you Kaye and Peter for making today happen. πŸ₯°

Thank you for a wonderful day, we loved being on Sunshine Coast and spending time with you both, it was a real treat. A couple of hundred years ago we’d have been declared a Jonah and shoved overboard though I think!πŸ›₯️πŸ₯‚πŸ˜‚xx

It started with drinks on Wednesday with our Voorburg family. Friday was our tour at the International Criminal Court with Joanne, our Aussie friend living in Voorburg. Saturday was a mini hail storm in Leidschendam. Sunday was helping Monica and Michael, South African friends living in Voorburg, take out their newly purchased Grand Banks boat for the first time and "showing them the ropes". Finishing off Sunday evening with a meet up with Australians living in the Netherlands Alice and Joe Ward with a special appearance by their dog Ollie 🐾.

What a great week!

We decided to do a big day and just get ourselves from Werkendam to Voorburg in one hit, a 6 hour day of travelling. It turned out to be an interesting trip. We travelled along the Waal for a short period and fortunately she was lovely and calm.

Ottersluis was our turn off point. We have never been in this type of sluis set up, we were rather taken by surprise. When we exit the sluis we had to go around a bend and the water level dropped to 2.7 feet. 😱 Our turn back, go no further is 3 feet. Slowly the level increased and we were in good water.

Then we came to our route through Rotterdam with a range of low bridges. Down came both sections of the canopy. (Seperate post of video)

Finally we were in the Rijn-Shiekaanal and into Zuidfliet and approaching our destination. The last section of our cruising day making the whole day worthwhile. Love this area of the Netherlands, it's beautiful.

Beautiful! I love how you spend your summers!

we have done some of this route and stopped in the same place in voorburg. So many bridges! But absolutely lovely. We had a deadline so had to rush through but will go back to savour further.

We passed you when you were moored at Voorburg but unfortunately you weren’t on board. We were en route back to Rotterdam. With Seana Emily Lambert and Julie Hillier. Back over in August. May see you somewhere then!!! ‘Martinique’
